The first day of school came too soon.
This morning, Arjun clung to me like a koala.
He’s only three. And today was his very first day of school.
He wore his favourite shoes and his blue backpack…
but his little face looked unsure.
Mama… can I stay with you today? he whispered.
I knelt beside him, kissed his forehead, and said,
I’ll walk you in. And I’ll be right here when you come back.
We walked through the school gate together - his tiny hand in mine.
Inside, everything felt big - the classrooms, the noise, the new faces.
Arjun looked up at me one last time and said with teary eyes, You’ll come back?
Always, I said, kissing his cheek.
I’ll be right here when your day ends.
That day, I waited outside the school gate, trying not to walk back and forth.
I looked at the clock again and again - the time felt so slow.
And yes - I stood right there by the school door,
waiting with all my heart,
until my little boy came running back into my arms.
The second day, he waved a little.
The third day, he painted a rainbow.
By the fourth, he made a new friend.
Now?
Arjun wakes up and asks,
Mama, is it a school day?
He puts on his shoes, grabs his backpack, and rushes to the door.
And every morning, I still go to drop him.
Every afternoon, I still wait by the door -just like the first day.
Because even though he’s learning to fly…
I’ll always be the nest.
