In the bright, twinkling waters of Coral Bay, there lived a tiny silver fish named Shimmer.
Shimmer loved many things-how the sunlight painted golden ripples on the waves, how the seaweed swayed like underwater dancers, and how bubbles shimmered as they floated past his nose.
But more than anything… Shimmer loved watching the birds.
Every morning, she’d peek above the water and see them swooping and gliding, their wings catching the wind like magic.
"Oh, how lucky they are," she sighed. "If only I had wings… then I could fly too."
One sunny afternoon, Shimmer made up her mind.
She swam faster than ever, her tail flicking like a silver arrow. She shot out of the water - higher, higher - until the wind kissed her scales. She flapped her fins as hard as she could.
For a single heartbeat, it felt like flying.
But then… the air grew dry. Her gills burned. There was no water to breathe!
SPLASH!π¦
Shimmer tumbled back into the bay, coughing and shivering.
From a nearby rock, an old sea turtle named Marlo had been watching. His eyes twinkled kindly.
"Why are you leaping so high, little one?" he asked.
"I want to fly like the birds," Shimmer said sadly. "But I can’t breathe up there, and I always fall."
Marlo chuckled, his shell creaking as he shifted.
"That’s because you were made for the water, not the sky. Birds can’t swim like you. You can zip through coral mazes, dance with the waves, and breathe beneath the sea. That’s your gift."
Shimmer thought about it. She remembered the joy of racing through glittering schools of fish, twisting and turning like a silver ribbon in the water.
"I guess I never realized how special that is," she said.
From that day on, Shimmer didn’t try to fly anymore. Instead, she became the fastest, happiest swimmer in Coral Bay-gliding, darting, and twirling through the sea with pride in the gift she already had.
Learning: The gifts you have are worth more than the ones you wish for.
